钟灵山:“免费”的诞生

1895年美国珀尔韦特发明并生产吉露牌果冻。他用了2年时间仍然无法推动这种在当时显得异类的食品进入市场。销售不畅的主要原因在于消费者不了解这种产品，而且也不知道到底该怎么吃。珀尔韦特在1899年以450美元的售价将产品包括商标一起卖给邻居伍德沃德。伍德沃德天生是个出色的推销员，1902年他化了336美元在《妇女家庭杂志》上刊登了一篇3平方英寸的广告：“只要在吉露牌果冻上撒上一层鲜奶油或是薄薄的一层奶油冻，就能做成一道像样的甜品。如果你想要非常诱人的果冻，那么我们有几百种不同的精美配方可以供你自由选择。” 为了向消费者展示吉露牌果冻各种搭配食用方法，伍德沃德的杰纳西食品公司印制了几万份果冻调制指南，并把这些小手册交给销售员让他们免费送到千家万户。这一良策巧妙避开了销售员在销售产品会碰到的主要障碍：除非销售员耗费巨资取得外来销售员资格证，否则不被允许到大多数小镇挨家挨户作推销。由于免费赠送并不是销售，这些销售员可以到各家去敲门赠送果冻调制指南。当散发完指南后，销售员会找到当地的商家鼓动他们进货。1904年吉露牌果冻的年销售额突破了100万美元大关。杰纳西食品公司在发展的最初25年间一共在美国散发了大约2.5亿份免费手册，并最终成为美国家喻户晓的一个品牌。这也催生了20世纪最强大的一种推销手段----免费派送某样东西，目的是创造另一种需求。（摘自Chris Anderson《免费》.）
